Small Businesses Stress about Social Media

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

We are constantly bombarded with information that tells us that as a business we need to use social media, we need to twitter, make sure we’re active on Facebook or LinkedIn or both, and have we got a video on You Tube or a podcast to help market ourselves in the 21st Century.

Oh and let’s not forget Blogging, some people say a couple of blogs a week, some experts say 10 blogs a week and yet you might struggle just to write one.

As small businesses find their social media voice and realise in some arena’s they are loud enough to compete against bigger businesses, the extra pressure is introduced because they don’t have enough hours in the day to do it all. Possibly in your business, you are the marketing, accounts, sales and production department and you have to spread yourself to do everything.

It is no wonder that stress builds up, are you using the grenade effect on your social media, this means doing a bit on everything and hoping that you might be doing something right to get some positive contacts from your hours of effort.  Or are you so frightened by the huge social media entity that you have not even attempted to use social media yet.

I know I have experienced this with my social media, over the last 24 months I have experienced both joy and despair with my social media, as a business owner I want to make sure I am effective spreading my business message.  I have read books and listened to audio books on the subject, I have attended workshops online and offline to understand how to be effective and I have been most fortunate to have found an amazing marketing company who I trust and have the patience to educate me on effective social media marketing.

So how can you reduce your stress in this social media correctiveness (yes it’s a made up word) minefield, well the first thing is start with just one thing, use the one that you feel most comfortable with. When I started with social media I began with Facebook because I am very visual and I liked the way it displayed videos and images on the screen.  As you begin to get more comfortable you can then start building your social media arsenal, you will be amazed how quickly you’ll start to pick things up, use the one that plays to your strengths.

To reduce your stress create a social media strategy and attach some goals to it, I would suggest you sign up for some workshops they are a great place to learn the basics.  Without this your ignorance will cost you money because you can waist hours of your precious time on social media without getting anywhere.

Social media is here to stay and the way people do business and talk about business has changed radically and I think in a good way.  Authenticity is at the forefront and I think that is a breath of fresh air, those so called soft skills that are seen as fluffy are more important in the business world and so they should be.  Honesty and the personality of you and your business can be expressed so much more easily.  Customers and prospects can learn more about you and your business through social media than they ever could via your old static sales and marketing literature.

One of the other ways to reduce your stress is to have fun and let your hair down, let’s face it you wanted to start your own business for a reason; there was a passion and desire that compelled you.  That’s what you need to share; it will be so much easier to find things to say and share when you can tap into this.  Embrace the technology, but at a pace that suits you, because then you will become more effective.  Relax! you will eventually get comfortable with it, too much pressure opens the door to silly mistakes and rash decisions which costs time and money.

Developing a good Stress IQ is vital in reducing the stress, give yourself some good constructive feedback then take the actions required to help you get a better control and start to create a stucture, small consiten

So how do you stress about using social media?

Stress in Small Businesses

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Hi everyone I am writing this while I am on holiday so it is going to be short.

I have just been chatting with some great guys at the bar who where talking about how difficult they are finding running their business because they always seem to have low energy and are finding it very difficult in getting focused and sleep.

I of course was very interested in what these strangers where saying.

What I noticed was these four people where supposed to be on holiday relaxing but they were all very tense and far from achieving relaxation.

I explained that this was my area of expertise and discussed with them the importance of taking a more proactive approach against stress in their business, would improve their overall performance and wellbeing.

You see the feeling of low energy, lack of sleep, poor concentration and being more susceptible to bugs/viruses is classic signs of stress.

Yet this is overlooked when businesses want to increase performance especially in small businesses, but having the courage to acknowledge and act on these difficulties you will improve your overall performance.

If you are a business owner you need to develop skills to manage and reduce your stress because if you are not working at your optimal performance neither is your business, and lets face it as business owners challenges are never far away , but if you want to be effective in your business and create the success that you believe your company can achieve, you need to be in the best physical and mental health possible.

The problem is that when you have not got your thoughts and emotions aligned and working for you, you are in a constant state of conflict, this conflict will be effecting both your physical and mental state.

In order to do that you need to speak to experts so you can unleash your potential both mentally and physically. Now generally when I talk to my clients about this the first excuse is time, well I am sorry, but I do not buy that, we all have the same 24 hours, the different is how effective we are with that time and how honest we are about the excuses we make to avoid dealing with these challenges.

In the book “the Inner game of stress” it talks about knowing when to ‘gear up’ or ‘gear down’, and how people see gearing down as a luxury, the problem with this is that gearing down is as important as gearing up. Think about driving a car up a hill you will get to the point where the cars momentum is decreasing and no matter how hard you put your foot on the accelerator the car will start to slow down, you wouldn’t go up a gear, you would drop a gear or two because when you drop a gear you may slow down, but you increase the power of the engine and your momentum increases.

You need to do the same, it’s not always the best strategy to force yourself to perform, in fact your brain does not respond well under this pressure it needs a lower gear and by doing this you will reap the benefits and accomplish your tasks quicker making you more effective.

You see when you are relaxed you are able to think better and be more creative, you have more energy because your sleeping better and your immune system is more effective and benefiting every area of you life.

Are you ready to live the life you deserve?

Then perhaps you need to re-look at how you are managing your stress.

Owning a business is supposed to be fun, after all is that not why you started your business because you were passionate about what you do, and you believe you can do it better and of course you wanted to be the boss.

I hope you have a great weekend and remember to drop a gear or two.

Thanks

Geoff

5 Tips to help you reduce your Stress

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Many people suffer from stress and at many different levels;

I have placed together some tips to help you deal with your stress more effectively.

Self hypnosis – Hypnosis is an amazing way of getting yourself in to a state of complete relaxation, it can be as simple as listening to a CD or finding something on iTunes.  Find yourself a quiet place or somewhere you can give yourself 30 minutes, as you progress I normally recommend you create a relaxing routine that naturally falls into your day.

Meditation – Personally I found this very strange at first, but once I opened my mind to the possibilities I really enjoyed the experience.  My personal aim is to do this every day for around 30 minutes, but as usual, something always gets in the way so even doing 5 minutes can actually help when time is tight.

To me it’s about calming the mind and controlling your state so I can relax and allow my body to be at its optimal level.

Moderate your consumption of alcohol and caffeine – if you are suffering from stress you must do everything possible to reduce it. This may also mean giving up caffeine, smoking, sugar etc.  It may seem useful at the time but the benefits will be short lived but there can be other adverse effects such as lack of sleep.

Sleep – If you can have a good night’s sleep you will allow your body to recharge and wake up feeling more refreshed and ready for the days challenges with a clearer head.

Having a healthy diet – Not only is it more interesting to have variety in your diet but it is good to give your body a wide range of vitamins and nutrients.  Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables, fruit and grain which are especially healthy. There is a lot to be said for your 5 a day.

I would love to share more with you and help you live a happy and successful life. For more information on workshops regarding anti stress strategies and life success tool email me on lifesuccess@geoffnicholson.co.uk

Stress and its effects on us and the people around us

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

It always amazes me how little people regard their health and there business productivity which can ultimately be effected by stress.  Oh no I have mentioned the word “stress” this is where you switch off or click the back button.

If you are still with me well done that is the first step of awareness and acceptance.  Unfortunately the problem with the word stress is that a minority can see it as an excuse to have some time off work, or in some cases because the team leader, manager or possibly CEO/director has a high tolerance of stress. They tend to believe that everyone has the same level of coping but the truth of the matter is they don’t, which can end up leaving your companies productivity affected because of ignorance.

Stress is not all bad we use good stress (eustress) when we are excited, stimulated, creative, empowered and inspired.  But we all have a point in which we can no longer cope with the negative or toxic stress, situations of frustration, worry, and anger etc.   Let’s face it in the current economic crisis that is appearing all over the press it is no wonder we worry. In truth it is not helping us “ worry is making things worse”.

Negative stress affects your ability in so many ways including communication, management, concentration and sleep, it affects you digestive system and immune system so pretty much every function you need to work and live effectively is affected by this response that has been with the human species since we have been hunting sabre tooth tigers.  It is a primitive primeval response that we use in a modern day society; we call it fight or flight.

Even though this can affect us so much in our lives, a lot of us either do not admit it is affecting us or worry what people will think if we are being affected by stress.

Well how’s that working for you?

I have personally gone through stress overload and I would not wish it on anyone and I see not point of ignoring it in a hope it will simply disappear.  What if you could help yourself and your business or you job by dealing with this.

If we look at it in a simple way, stress effects the immune system, digestion system, sleep, concentration, communication and if you keep on ignoring it could lead to severe illnesses like heart attacks, ulcers and nervous breakdowns.

In business it can effect communication, concentration, relationships, health or well being.  These are the foundation of successful business.  If you are unable to communicate and create positive relationships between your clients and your staff it can also effect  morale and that effects more people which then can lead to an increase of absenteeism this will cost you more money in training temp staff and possible decrease staff retention.

There are simple ways to help you deal with stress in a beneficial way, but that’s on the next blog

You owe it to yourself, your family and your business to be the best you can be, you just need to face up to the fact that you might need a little help.
