Empowerment Through Change

Stress and its effects on us and the people around us

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

It always amazes me how little people regard their health and there business productivity which can ultimately be effected by stress.  Oh no I have mentioned the word “stress” this is where you switch off or click the back button.

If you are still with me well done that is the first step of awareness and acceptance.  Unfortunately the problem with the word stress is that a minority can see it as an excuse to have some time off work, or in some cases because the team leader, manager or possibly CEO/director has a high tolerance of stress. They tend to believe that everyone has the same level of coping but the truth of the matter is they don’t, which can end up leaving your companies productivity affected because of ignorance.

Stress is not all bad we use good stress (eustress) when we are excited, stimulated, creative, empowered and inspired.  But we all have a point in which we can no longer cope with the negative or toxic stress, situations of frustration, worry, and anger etc.   Let’s face it in the current economic crisis that is appearing all over the press it is no wonder we worry. In truth it is not helping us “ worry is making things worse”.

Negative stress affects your ability in so many ways including communication, management, concentration and sleep, it affects you digestive system and immune system so pretty much every function you need to work and live effectively is affected by this response that has been with the human species since we have been hunting sabre tooth tigers.  It is a primitive primeval response that we use in a modern day society; we call it fight or flight.

Even though this can affect us so much in our lives, a lot of us either do not admit it is affecting us or worry what people will think if we are being affected by stress.

Well how’s that working for you?

I have personally gone through stress overload and I would not wish it on anyone and I see not point of ignoring it in a hope it will simply disappear.  What if you could help yourself and your business or you job by dealing with this.

If we look at it in a simple way, stress effects the immune system, digestion system, sleep, concentration, communication and if you keep on ignoring it could lead to severe illnesses like heart attacks, ulcers and nervous breakdowns.

In business it can effect communication, concentration, relationships, health or well being.  These are the foundation of successful business.  If you are unable to communicate and create positive relationships between your clients and your staff it can also effect  morale and that effects more people which then can lead to an increase of absenteeism this will cost you more money in training temp staff and possible decrease staff retention.

There are simple ways to help you deal with stress in a beneficial way, but that’s on the next blog

You owe it to yourself, your family and your business to be the best you can be, you just need to face up to the fact that you might need a little help.

Masterminding

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

I will be giving you some more tips on how to achieve a higher level of success in all areas of your life.

Today I want to talk about one of the most powerful and yet under-utilised tools in creating success. A tool that people like Thomas Eddison, Henry Ford, Anthony Robbins and Jack Canfield have used. I want to talk about Mastermind Groups.

The mastermind group concept comes from Napoleon Hill, the author of “Think and Grow Rich”, one of the great teachers in the field of human potential.

In simple terms, a Mastermind Group is a group of two or more people coming together with a common purpose and the desire to support each other with ideas, encouragement, insights and resources in a non-competitive environment.

People create or join Mastermind Groups for all sort of different reasons; business growth, personal growth, working on a specific project, emotional support or a sense of community and they are often surprised to find a lot more than they expected.

The old adage “two heads are better than one” comes into play and successful people choose not to make it all on their own.

A Mastermind Group is based on the personal intention to contribute and help the other members of your group, as well as to receive support from them. I am a member of several mastermind groups; some international and some in the UK, but the most effective one I ever had, is with another coach from the North East. This may seem counterintuitive and paradoxical to some, given that on a business level we are competitors. However, we also have the skills and knowledge to help each other on a personal and professional level and build our companies to their highest potential. We can guide each other in order to grow our businesses into a higher level of success, given that there are many organisations and people in the world that could use the skills and knowledge that we have.

There is a special kind of magic, a powerful group synergy that emerges when people work together to support each other.  The results can be truly mind-blowing..

Masterminding is also about getting clear and taking ACTION. Members of Mastermind Groups focus on their goals and what the most effective steps are in order to achieve them.

When you have a group of people with the conscious, positive intention of supporting themselves and each other, who are willing and able to share and enrich their knowledge, masterminding can be deeply rewarding for everyone involved. Being in a room or on a call with like-minded, ambitious people who you trust, makes it a lot more fun to challenge yourself and go after bigger goals.

I invite you all to start or join a Mastermind Group today, together with people you would like help, people you would take pleasure in sharing ideas with and enjoy the benefits for yourself.

Are you ready to create the success in your life you deserve? Are you willing to support other people in achieving their dreams?

Have a great month and I wish you all the greatest success!

The Power of Visualisation

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

I would like to share with you the necessary tools to help you improve your professional and personal success.  I invite you to try on these techniques, which have been proven time and   time again to help individuals create success in their lives, for yourself.

I’m always amazed with the power and the enjoyment that my clients derive from this experience when they’re visualising.

How does it work and why? When thoughts are felt deeply and clearly enough, they have the power to influence our subconscious, which in turn affects our mindset, habits and actions. As a result, it helps to attract new people, situations and circumstances in our lives, to fit our mind set.

There is a part of the brain known as the RAS (Reticular Activating System), which plays a vital part in our ability to achieve goals using your subconscious mind.  This is where the power of attraction stems from. It is the job of the RAS to highlight people or situations that will help in achieving our goals.

So how can we use this internal mechanism in our favour? Well, we have all experienced busy days in our lives where just for one moment we stopped and thought about what it would be like if we where in a lovely location, looking out across a lovely, serene, turquoise sea, feeling the warmth of the sun and watching the lovely blue sky…

Perhaps you are sitting with you feet in the cool water, with a cocktail in your hand, becoming aware of the smell of sun cream or the sound of a light breeze rustling though the palm trees…

Just by allowing your brain to form these pictures in your head as you read these few lines, you may notice that you have become more relaxed or possibly more excited for you next holiday. Feels good, doesn’t it?

The process you just went through is visualisation, although to get the full effect and benefit of this technique it would be useful to see in your minds eye in as much detail as possible this lovely beach image. Not everyone can actually see a HD quality image in their head however. Some people have other dominant sensors; maybe it is sound. To some it may be touch, for others it is a feeling felt in their gut that everything is well. What matters is that when you use visualization you activate this sensation, be it visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic. The more you practice with it the better you will become and the quicker you will be able to tap into the positive feelings generated by the dynamic of the technique.

Sports professionals use the power of visualisation widely. Jack Nicklaus, the American professional golfer with the most victories in major championships, has said “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there; its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.”

In Neuro-Linguistic Programming we use a technique called future pacing, which allows us to experience an event before it has actually happened and thus monitor and determine our behaviour internally. If you apply this example in your life, say for an important meeting, an interview or something else that requires your attention, and you visualise yourself going through that event and emerging calm, focused and successful, when the actual real event comes around your RAS will help you see the success and positivity rather than the failure and negativity.

I always believe that we, ourselves, are the best judges of all techniques and tools in our lives. I invite you then, to practice with this and don’t forget to have fun in the process! Remember that the only limits are the ones we impose on ourselves and let me know if you need any help!

Goal Achieving

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

I want to share with you another very powerful and useful success tip: the power of goal achieving.

Andrew Carnegie once said “If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes”

Experts on the science of success know the brain is a goal-seeking organism.  Whatever goal you set, your subconscious mind will work night and day to achieve it.  It has also been said that you are more likely to achieve your goals if you put them on paper because it makes them more real to you.

To make sure a goal unleashes the power of your subconscious mind, it must meet two criteria:  It must be stated in a measurable way.  The statement “I will loose weight” in not as clear as “I will loose 10 pounds”, which in turn is not as powerful as “I will weight 135lbs by 5pm on the 30th June”.  The third is clearer, because anybody can show up at 5pm on 30th June and look at the scales.  It will either be 135lbs or less or not.  Notice the two criteria are how much (some measurable quantity) and by when (specific time & date).

Be as specific as possible with all aspects of your goals – include the make, model, year and features ….. the size, weight, shape and form … and any other details.  Remember, vague goals produce vague results.

When there are no criteria for measurement and your goal is simply something you want, a wish, a preference, or a good idea you can help engage your subconscious mind and get clarity by writing down your goals in detail.

There are a couple of models that you can use to help make goal setting easier. I found the SMART Model the simplest.  SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time specific.  The goal stated before about the weight loss fits these criteria. I personally also think that it is important to stretch your self when setting goals because it is that stretch that takes you to the next level of your personal development.

So I would like to invite you to challenge yourself and write down 3 goals that you would like to achieve in the next week, 6 months and 1 year.  Remember to use the smart model, if you have any questions about this then please email me at geoff@geoffnicholson.co.uk and I will be more that happy to support you.  I wish you an amazing month ahead and a lot of goal setting and achieving.

Lessons in Leadership

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

am sitting in a hotel in Buckinghamshire and I am reading a great article (Success Magazine) written about a man called Sam Duncan who is the CEO of Office Max.

I think this article is great because it is full of values and ethics that really should be adopted by alot of companies large and small

  1. Remember where you came from and be yourself.  Be humble “Pedestals are for flowers not leaders”
  2. Listen and Learn, by listening, you’ll learn more than talking.
  3. Know your audience.  This includes your customers, associates, share holders and suppliers
  4. It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission. Sam says “That he can’t think of a single instance he has regretted taking action.  But he has regretted NOT taking action”.
  5. Know your numbers. Office Max associates are expected to know sales figures from the prior day, quater and year to date, and to take responsibility, accept the numbers and move on.
  6. You pay for a training program whether you have one or not. Training harnesses the built-In motivation most people aready have to do good work.
  7. Just be honest, no matter how much it hurts.
  8. Encourage constructive feedback.
  9. Remember that a leaders job is to serve. Sam’s motto is Help Other People Everyday (HOPE).  Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echos are truly endless.
  10. Don’y give up. Don’t ever give up

Being a good leader is not about being liked all the time, its about being fair, encouraging, realistic, empathetic and firm when you need to be.  It about how you communicate to your team, if things are tough its not always beneficial to go in guns blazing, you need to understand each individual in your team in order to get the maximum potential out of them and know how far thay can be stretched.  When you can master that,  your team will become happier, more productive and motivated.

“I would not waste my life in friction when
it could be turned into momentum.”
- Frannces Willard

So how do you lead, and how could you become an even more effective leader?

Have a great Day
